Xcaret Park
Xcaret is a large eco-archaeological park about 6 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, built around a stretch of coastline with natural inlets, underground rivers, and Mayan ruins. It's one of the most visited attractions on the Riviera Maya, and for good reason: there's enough here to fill a full day without feeling like you've rushed through it.
The underground river swim is the centerpiece. You float through a series of caverns and open channels wearing a life jacket, covering about 600 meters of the park's natural waterway. The water is cold and the light inside the caverns is low — bring a waterproof bag for your phone if you want photos. The river entrance queues get long by mid-morning, so go first thing.
Beyond the river, the park has a coral reef snorkel area, a sea turtle conservation program (you can watch releases in season), a butterfly pavilion, a small zoo with jaguars and flamingos, and a replica Mayan village with craft demonstrations. The evening show — a two-hour performance of pre-Hispanic and Mexican folk traditions — is included in the ticket price and runs nightly.
Tickets are cheaper bought online in advance. The base admission covers most activities; the premium ticket adds the Xcaret Ha underground river circuit and a few other extras. Food inside the park is expensive — the buffet restaurants are included with some ticket tiers, so check what's covered before you buy.
Getting there: Xcaret runs its own shuttle buses from Playa del Carmen and most Riviera Maya hotels. Taxis from Playa take about 10 minutes and cost around 150 pesos.
