Kitesurfing & Watersports near Playa del Carmen
The Caribbean coast of the Riviera Maya gets consistent trade winds from November through March, which makes it a reliable spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing during the winter months. The main kite beach is at Punta Venado, about 10 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, where the wind runs parallel to a long, flat stretch of sand with shallow water close to shore.
Several IKO-certified kite schools operate out of Punta Venado and Playa del Carmen. Beginner courses typically run two to three days and cover body dragging, board recovery, and your first water starts. The shallow, flat water near the beach makes it a forgiving place to learn. Intermediate and advanced riders can rent gear by the hour or the day once they have their IKO card.
Beyond kitesurfing, the coast has good options for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and jet skiing. Most beach clubs in Playa rent paddleboards by the hour. For something more structured, several operators run guided paddleboard tours through the mangroves at Nichupte Lagoon near Cancun — a flat-water route with good birdwatching that's a solid half-day trip.
Parasailing is available from the main beach in Playa and from most of the larger beach clubs. Flights run about 10 to 15 minutes and give a clear view of the reef line from above. Prices are negotiable, especially outside peak hours.
Wind season: November through March is the most reliable window for kitesurfing. The summer months are calmer and better suited to paddleboarding and kayaking.
