What Are OTAs and How Do They Work?

Online Travel Agencies, or OTAs, are booking platforms that sell travel-related services. The biggest ones bring together hotels, vacation rentals, hostels, and rural properties in one place, letting travelers compare prices, read reviews, and filter by location, amenities, and budget.

How they work

OTAs sit between the guest and the property. They only make money when a booking is completed, and they typically charge a commission of 10–25% of the sale price. That sounds steep, but in exchange you get access to a platform that invests heavily in SEO and marketing on your behalf.

Why list on OTAs?

  • International reach. Your property becomes visible to travelers from anywhere in the world, not just those who already know your brand.
  • Traffic. OTAs drive enormous search volumes. Your listing benefits from their marketing spend at no extra cost to you.
  • Trust. Travelers trust OTAs. Detailed photos, descriptions, and hundreds of verified guest reviews give potential guests the confidence to book.
