How to Buy a House in Mexico as a Foreigner
Mexico is one of the most popular countries for foreign real estate investment, whether you're buying a vacation home or a permanent residence. The process has a few specific requirements worth knowing before you start.
1. Choose an unrestricted location
Under Article 27 of the Mexican Constitution, restricted zones include areas within 100 kilometers of the border and within 50 kilometers of the coast. If the property you want falls inside a restricted zone, you can still buy it through a bank trust (fideicomiso) or a Mexican corporation.
2. Get the necessary permits
Foreign buyers need a permit from the Ministry of Foreign Relations. This is handled in person at the Dirección General de Asuntos Jurídicos in Mexico.
3. Arrange financing
Mexican banks offer mortgage products for foreign buyers. Requirements are generally the same as for Mexican nationals, plus a valid passport and proof of legal stay in the country.
