How to Save on Electricity in Your Vacation Rental
Electricity is one of the bigger ongoing costs for any rental property. These three steps will help you bring it down without affecting the guest experience.
1. Check the electrical installation
Electrical leaks are more common than most owners realize. Hire a qualified electrician to inspect the system and carry out any necessary maintenance. It's the most impactful thing you can do, and it's worth doing before anything else.
2. Unplug appliances when they're not in use
Devices left plugged in draw power even when switched off. It's a small drain per appliance, but across a whole property it adds up on the monthly bill. Make it part of your turnover checklist.
3. Use air conditioning responsibly
In warm climates like the Riviera Maya, air conditioning is the biggest electricity draw. Keep the thermostat calibrated, make sure furniture isn't blocking the vents, and have the units serviced at the start of each hot season. It's also worth setting a temperature lock so guests can't push the system to extremes.
These aren't complicated fixes. Done consistently, they'll reduce your electricity costs and extend the life of your appliances.
