6 Tips to Set Your Kids Up for Financial Success

A good education and encouragement go a long way, but there are a few extra things you can do to give your children a real head start. Here are six habits worth building early.

1. Teach them about money

Start simple: savings jars, allowances, the difference between wants and needs. As they get older, introduce more complex ideas like investing and compound interest. The earlier they understand how money works, the better.

2. Foster a love of learning

Answer every question they ask. If you don't know the answer, look it up together. Kids who grow up curious tend to stay that way.

3. Develop strategic thinking

Teach them to make plans and follow through. Chess, puzzles, and logic games are a good start, anything that makes them think a few moves ahead.

4. Encourage smart risk-taking

Fear is natural, but it shouldn't be paralyzing. Help your kids learn to weigh decisions with their head, not just their gut. Taking calculated risks is a skill, and it can be practiced.

5. Nurture an entrepreneurial mindset

Very few people build real wealth working for someone else. Encourage your kids to think about creating things, not just consuming them. Even a small lemonade stand teaches more than most textbooks.

6. Teach them that money is a tool

This one matters most. Money isn't the goal: it's what gets you to the goal. Kids who understand that early are far less likely to make decisions driven by fear or greed.

The best example you can set is making smart decisions yourself, like putting your property to work as a vacation rental.
